What is a Dental Crown?

A crown (commonly called a cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface, restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that fillings or other restorations cannot correct.

Although there are several types of crowns, ceramic (tooth-colored crowns) are the most popular because they resemble your natural teeth. They are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need replacement. We craft the porcelain crowns to match the shape, size, and color of your teeth, giving you a natural, long-lasting, beautiful smile.

Reasons For Crowns

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is essential to achieving a healthy and beautiful smile. However, even the most diligent brushing and flossing can sometimes not protect our pearly whites from damage or decay. This is when dental crowns can help.

There are various reasons why someone may need a dental crown, including:

  • Broken or fractured teeth.
  • Cosmetic enhancement.
  • Decayed teeth.
  • Fractured fillings.
  • Large fillings.
  • The tooth has a root canal.

What Does Getting a Crown Involve?

A crown procedure usually requires two appointments. Your first appointment will include taking several highly accurate molds (or impressions) that we use to create your custom crown. We’ll also use the mold to create a temporary crown, which will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until a dental laboratory fabricates your new crown.

While the tooth is numb, Dr. Nicholas Cox and the Cox Family Dentistry team will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to fit the crown properly. Once we accomplish these steps, we’ll place your temporary crown with temporary dental cement and check your teeth to ensure you are biting properly.

At your second appointment, we’ll remove your temporary crown, clean the tooth, and carefully place your new crown to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental visits to check your new crown.
