Root Canal Therapy

When the inner nerve of a tooth becomes affected by decay or infection, root canal therapy may be required to restore the tooth. This will provide full functionality to the tooth and mouth, and will not cause any future problems with adjacent teeth. A root canal may be necessary when the inside of the tooth has become infected. Other causes include a tooth that has deep decay, has been subjected to repeated dental procedures or has become cracked or chipped. Usually, a root canal is a relatively simple procedure involving little or no discomfort. With proper care, an endodontic treated tooth will function normally for many years.

Do I need a Root Canal??

The center of each tooth houses soft tissue with nerves and blood vessels. When the infection reaches the pulp, it puts pressure on the nerve and causes excruciating pain. The only way to stop the pain is to remove the pulp and clean the area. You may need a root canal if you experience:

  • Severe, throbbing pain when chewing or applying pressure to the tooth
  • Dental abscess or pus around the tooth
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Swollen and tender gums
  • Severe discoloration
  • Bad breath

Sometimes there are no symptoms, but the dentist can detect the infection during a routine appointment.

To restore the health of the tooth and avoid the need for extraction, Dr. Cox will remove the infected and injured tissues from within the tooth, clean the tooth, and fill it with a medicated material. We will then cap the tooth with a restoration, such as a dental crown, to return the tooth to its original shape and structure. In most cases, a root canal can be completed in only one or two comfortable visits to our office.

If you need any procedures, Dr. Cox, along with our entire dental team, will work hard to provide you with a pleasant, comfortable experience each time you visit our office. To learn more about root canal treatment in Plano, Texas, we welcome you to contact us today.
